How the college GPA calculator works

College GPAs weight every course by its credit hours — a 4-credit lab affects your GPA more than a 1-credit seminar. Each letter grade converts to grade points, gets multiplied by the course's credits, and the total is divided by total credits. Most scholarships, internships, and grad schools look at this cumulative 4.0 number.

Worked example

Suppose you took three courses this semester: an A in a 3-credit class, a B+ in a 4-credit class, and an A- in a 3-credit class. Convert each grade to points, multiply by credits, then divide by total credits (10):

GPA = (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 3.7 × 3) ÷ 10 = (12 + 13.2 + 11.1) ÷ 10 = 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63

The heavier 4-credit B+ pulls the average down more than the two 3-credit A-range grades pull it up — that's credit weighting in action.
