How the final grade calculator works

Deep breath — it's just algebra. Your course grade is a weighted mix of the work you've already done and the final exam. The calculator isolates the final's share and solves for the exact score that lands you on your target, then shows the same math for every letter grade so you can see your floor and your ceiling at a glance.

Worked example

Say you have an 88% going in, you want to finish with a 90%, and the final is worth 30% of your grade. The work before the final counts for the other 70%. Plug it in:

Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 28.4 ÷ 0.30 ≈ 94.7%

So you'd need about a 94.7% on the final to pull your grade up to a 90. That's an honest, exam-day number — round up and give yourself a cushion.

What you'd need on a 30%-weighted final (current grade 88%)

Target gradeLetterScore needed on final

85%B77.7%

93%A104.7% (not reachable)

Standard US letter bands: A 93+, A- 90–92, B 83–86, B- 80–82. Anything over 100% means the target can't be reached with the final alone.
