How to Calculate Your Semester Grade (Without the Final)
Why you divide by the completed weight
The trap most students fall into: adding up weighted scores and dividing by 100 even though the final hasn't happened. That treats the final as a zero and makes your grade look 15–30 points worse than it is. Before the final, only the completed portion of the course exists — so you divide by that completed weight (80 in the example above), not by 100.
This is exactly how your school's grade portal computes your "current grade," which is why it matches the weighted-average method and not the divide-by-100 shortcut.
Step by step with a real example
Say your syllabus reads: homework 20%, quizzes 30%, midterms 30%, final 20%. Your averages so far: homework 95%, quizzes 84%, midterms 88%.

Points-based courses

Frequently asked questions
Why does my own math differ from the grade portal?
Usually one of three things: a dropped-lowest-score policy you didn't apply, a category with no grades yet being excluded automatically, or rounding. Recalculate with the drop applied and unfilled categories left out.
Does an ungraded assignment count as a zero?
Not until the due date passes and it's marked missing. Portals typically ignore ungraded items — but a missing (0) can drop a category average dramatically, so check which one you're looking at.
How do I combine this with the final later?
