How the semester GPA calculator works
The more credits you've completed, the more each new semester gets diluted. This calculator does the algebra: it works out the term GPA that pulls your cumulative average exactly to your target — and tells you honestly when the target isn't reachable in a single term.
Worked example
Say you have a 3.0 cumulative GPA over 30 credits, and you want to reach a 3.2 after a 15-credit semester. The formula solves for the GPA you need this term:
Needed = (3.2 × (30 + 15) − 3.0 × 30) ÷ 15 = (144 − 90) ÷ 15 = 54 ÷ 15 = 3.6
So a 3.6 term GPA would lift your cumulative from 3.0 to 3.2. Now the flip side: with 60 credits already done, hitting that same 3.2-to-3.4 jump in one 15-credit term would need a 4.2 — impossible, because the max is 4.0. That's why the calculator honestly flags targets you'd have to spread across multiple terms.
How reachable is a 0.2-point jump? (15-credit term)
| Credits completed | Current → target | Term GPA needed |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 3.0 → 3.2 | 3.60 (doable) |
| 60 | 3.0 → 3.2 | 4.00 (only with straight As) |
| 90 | 3.0 → 3.2 | 4.40 (not possible in one term) |
The same target gets steeper the more credits you've banked — proof that raising your GPA is easiest early and takes more terms later.
