Weighted Grade Calculator
This weighted grade calculator combines your category averages — homework, quizzes, exams — each weighted by its share of the course, so you get your true overall grade instead of a plain average.

Uses the standard U.S. grading scale (A = 4.0). Estimates only — confirm with your syllabus.
How the weighted grade calculator works
Most syllabi split your grade into categories — for example homework 20%, quizzes 30%, exams 50%. Average your scores within each category first, then enter each category's average and its weight here. The calculator multiplies each average by its weight, adds them up, and divides by the total weight.
Worked example
Say your category averages are homework 94% (worth 20%), quizzes 88% (worth 30%), and exams 81% (worth 50%). The weights already add up to 100%, so:
Grade = (94 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.30) + (81 × 0.50) = 18.8 + 26.4 + 40.5 = 85.7%
Notice the 85.7% sits below a plain average of the three numbers (87.7%) — because exams carry half the grade, that lower 81% drags the total down. That's exactly why weighting matters.
Typical syllabus category weights
| Category | Common weight | Example score |
|---|---|---|
| Homework / participation | 10–20% | 94% |
| Quizzes | 15–30% | 88% |
| Midterm exam | 20–30% | 82% |
| Final exam | 20–40% | 80% |
| Project / lab | 10–25% | 90% |
Weights vary by course — always use the split printed on your own syllabus. They should add up to about 100%.
