How Does Middle School GPA Work?
The math (same as high school, simpler)
Middle school GPAs are almost always unweighted: convert each letter to points, average across classes. A report card of A, A, B+, A−, B works out to (4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0) ÷ 5 = 18 ÷ 5 = 3.6. No honors bumps, no credit hours — every class counts the same. Some middle schools skip letter grades entirely (standards-based 1–4 marks or E/S/N scales); those don't convert cleanly to a 4.0 GPA, and the school's own conversion policy, if one exists, is the only authority.

The Algebra I case deserves emphasis: in districts that transcript it, a C earned at age 12 can sit in your high school GPA for four years. Many districts allow retaking the course in high school or excluding the grade — if a middle schooler in your house is taking a high-school-credit course, ask the counselor now which policy applies, not in 11th grade.
What middle school GPA is actually for
Its real function is feedback and placement. A 2.8 in 7th grade math is a signal to fix study habits while the stakes are near zero; strong middle school grades open honors and accelerated tracks in 9th grade, which do shape the transcript colleges see. The students who arrive in high school knowing how a GPA is computed — what one C does to a 3.8, why an A− isn't an A — treat freshman grades seriously from day one. Is a 3.5 GPA good in middle school?
On an unweighted scale it's a mix of As and Bs — strong, and typically enough for honors-track placement. But treat middle school GPA as a habit gauge, not a credential: nobody will ever ask for it after 8th grade.
Should my child retake Algebra I in 9th grade after a B in middle school?
A B usually signals readiness to move on to Geometry; retaking is worth considering after a C or lower, or shaky fundamentals. Districts differ on whether the retake replaces the original grade on the transcript — ask before deciding.
